Auditions & Our Approach

Do you teach audition skills?

Slate Acting Studio focuses on the foundational skills that support auditions, on-set work, and any on-camera performance. Rather than rehearsing specific audition formats, classes emphasize listening, presence, and authentic response— the same skills casting directors look for in auditions.

We don't train students to "perform for auditions." We train them to listen, respond, and be present—the skills auditions require.

Auditions are not a separate skill set. They are a context where foundational acting skills are tested. Casting directors don't hire "good slates" or "memorized sides." They hire people who listen, respond, feel present and alive, and adjust. That's what we teach.

What skills do students develop?

Skills that directly support auditions:

  • • Listening and responding truthfully
  • • Comfort being seen on camera
  • • Emotional regulation under pressure
  • • Clear communication and intention
  • • Adaptability and adjustment
  • • Confidence in unfamiliar material

Skills that transfer beyond auditions:

  • • Presence in front of others
  • • Self-expression
  • • Collaboration
  • • Self-trust
  • • Focus and attention

What don't you teach?

We do not drill sides for speed, simulate casting rooms, promise booking outcomes, or teach "tricks." This approach protects kids' mental health, supports long-term growth, and maintains our studio's integrity. Many parents are actually relieved by this—they just need it explained clearly.

Class Structure

How are classes structured?

Classes are organized by stages (Stage I: Fundamentals, with additional stages coming). Stages build skills progressively across terms. Students may join at the beginning of any Stage I term. Classes are limited to 8 students and grouped by age and stage to ensure appropriate pacing and peer connection.

What happens in a typical class?

Classes begin with warm-up exercises focused on presence and awareness. Students then work on scenes—sometimes solo, often in pairs or small groups. Each student performs on camera and receives gentle, specific feedback. The focus is on listening, reacting truthfully, and being comfortable being seen.

Are classes live or pre-recorded?

All classes are live and instructor-led. No pre-recorded content. This ensures real-time feedback, adaptation to student needs, and authentic interaction.

Enrollment & Terms

When can students enroll?

Students may join at the beginning of any Stage I term. Enrollment is limited, and students are grouped by age and stage to ensure appropriate pacing and peer connection.

How do I enroll my child?

You'll create a parent account and add your student profile during enrollment. Select a class from the Classes page to begin.

Can students continue across multiple terms?

Yes. Stages build skills progressively across terms. Students can enroll for a single term or continue across multiple terms to deepen their skills and progress through stages.

Technical Setup

What camera setup is needed?

A laptop, tablet, or phone with a camera works fine. Good lighting helps—facing a window or a simple lamp works well. We'll provide setup guidance before the first class.

What platform do you use?

Classes are conducted online via Zoom. The format is designed to feel intimate and personal, with small class sizes ensuring every student receives individual attention.

Expectations

What should we expect?

Expect a supportive, process-focused environment. Students won't be pressured to perform or memorize. The focus is on building confidence, listening skills, and comfort with being seen. Progress happens gradually and authentically.

What about attention span?

Classes are structured with movement, variety, and breaks. Students work in short bursts, and the small group size allows for individual pacing. Most students find the on-camera work engaging and stay focused naturally.

How is feedback given?

Feedback is given in real-time during sessions, with a focus on growth and encouragement. Our approach is constructive, specific, and always supportive. Written notes and practice suggestions are available in your parent dashboard.
